Howto is a cinematographic tutorial in which its creator teaches us how to make 3D text. But her exercise quickly gets complicated: the software spins out of control, and she discovers that she is no longer alone.

Howto est un tutoriel cinématographique dans lequel sa créatrice nous apprend à réaliser un texte en 3D. Mais très vite son exercice se complique, le logiciel devient incontrôlable, elle découvre alors qu’elle n’est plus seule.

“Hello and welcome to my new tutorial”: such is the opening line of thousands of video tutorials posted on the internet every day. Sensing the cinematic potential of these screencasts, so familiar to her, Elisabeth Caravella made a fictional tutorial filmed entirely from her computer screen.

In Howto, the tutorial is a theoretical and heterotopic space, at once surreal software and dance stage. Choreographic moments reveal digital “folds” and ghostly drapery that the dance heightens and transforms.

« Bonjour et bienvenue dans mon nouveau tutoriel », telle est la phrase d’introduction de milliers de didacticiels vidéos postés chaque jour sur internet. Décelant le potentiel cinématographique de ces screencasts qui lui sont si familiers, Élisabeth Caravella réalise un tutoriel fiction intégralement filmé depuis l’écran de son ordinateur.

Dans Howto, le tutoriel est un espace théorique et hétérotopique, à la fois logiciel surréaliste et scène de danse. Les instants chorégraphiques révèlent des « plis » informatiques et des drapés fantomatiques que la danse exacerbe et métamorphose.
